Burnout or Misalignment? Here’s How to Tell the Difference.
You’re tired.
You’re dragging yourself through the day.
Even the things you used to love feel heavy.
And the question starts creeping in:
Am I just burnt out… or am I completely misaligned?
The truth? It could be either. Or both.
But the difference matters.
What Burnout Feels Like
Burnout usually comes after a period of sustained effort—when you’ve been giving and pushing for too long without rest.
It’s a physiological and emotional crash.
Your body’s way of saying,
“I can’t run at this pace forever.”
You might still care deeply about the work or the mission,
but you’ve run out of fuel.
You don’t need to throw your life away.
You need space. Nervous system repair. Actual rest—not just scrolling.
Key question to ask yourself:
Would I still want to do this if I felt fully restored and resourced again?
If the answer is yes,
you’re likely burnt out.
What Misalignment Feels Like
Misalignment is different.
It’s not about pace. It’s about direction.
You’re not just tired—you’re numb.
Uninspired. Resisting the thing before you even begin.
Your body isn’t saying, “I need rest.”
It’s saying,
“Why are we still doing this?”
Even small tasks feel wrong.
You might be performing well, even succeeding from the outside—
but inside, something feels… off. Fake. Forced.
Key question to ask yourself:
If I had unlimited energy, would I still be doing this?
If the answer is no,
you’re likely out of alignment.
Burnout Can Mask Misalignment
Here’s the tricky part:
Sometimes burnout and misalignment travel together.
You might burn yourself out trying to survive in something that’s already misaligned.
You might take a “break,” feel a little better…
only to realise you still dread going back.
That’s not a sign you’re lazy.
It’s a sign you’ve outgrown your current container.
How to Move Forward
If it’s burnout:
→ Rest. Repair. Say no. Prioritise nervous system regulation.
→ Let yourself want again. Burnout disconnects us from desire.
If it’s misalignment:
→ Audit what’s no longer true for you.
→ Give yourself permission to evolve—even if others don’t understand.
→ Start exploring new paths before your current one burns you out even more.
You’re Not Broken. You’re Just Not Listening.
Whether it’s burnout or misalignment, the message is the same:
Your body is speaking. Your emotions are speaking. Your energy is telling you something.
The goal isn’t to “power through.”
It’s to pay attention.
You don’t owe the world a version of yourself that’s quietly falling apart.
You owe yourself the truth.
